At the end of the nineteenth century Carr Lake was a lake in the center of modern-day Salinas. It was drained to create more land for farming. It wants to be a lake again. And many Salinas residents have been working for decades to see that Carr Lake gets its wish.
Perhaps you have seen Carr Lake making its desire to be a lake again known to local growers and residents as it floods the farmlands after rain events. The picture at the top of this page was taken on April 16, 2006.In the rainy season – and especially during large storms – the farmlands south of Natividad Hospital, bounded roughly by Laurel Drive on the north-east, Sherwood Drive and Natividad Road on the north-west, and Highway 101 on the south-west, are partially or completely inundated. This is the historical Carr Lake saying to us, “I’m ready to be a lake again.I am ready to create a home for plants and animal.I am ready to provide flood protection and improve water quality. And, I am ready to provide recreational opportunities for people. Won’t you help?”
